What is ACER?

The ACER Scholarship Tests are used across Australia to identify academically able students for the award of a scholarship. The tests are designed to rank students, finely differentiating the top end of the performance.

Students are required to demonstrate a range of skills such as the ability to interpret, infer, deduce, and think critically. The tests are not curriculum-based and do not test the ability to retrieve learned knowledge, nor are they diagnostic.

Why is ACER important?

On top of being a prestigious award, top scholars can attend private schools all expenses covered! This is one reason why the ACER tests are so highly sought after and why every year the competition is extremely fierce.

ACER Scholarship Tests Structure

ACER Scholarship Tests include Primary level tests (entry into Years 4, 5, or 6) and Secondary level tests (entry into Years 7 to 12 – Level 1, 2, and 3). Primary level tests generally have 3 parts which are reading and viewing, mathematics and writing. The Reading and Viewing test provides a single measure of achievement reflecting comprehension and interpretation of written and visual material from a range of curriculum areas. For mathematics tests, students need to apply mathematical skills and knowledge to answer problems, including short calculations in each of the four operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students have to write two short pieces in response to two separate prompts for the writing test and it will be assessed in terms of the quality of content and ideas and the structure of expressions.

Secondary level tests generally have 4 parts being 2 written expression tasks, mathematics, and humanities – comprehension and interpretation (this is really a reading comprehension test). Two topics for writing will be set to allow students to use different styles of writing, students may express thoughts and ideas in writing. They are presented as two separate tests (one in Test 1 and one in Test 4). The humanities test asks students to answer questions related to written and visual material. The material may be drawn from subject areas such as English, Art, History, Geography, and Social Studies. Mathematics test attempts to measure students’ mathematical and scientific abilities and the materials may differ from standard school-based curriculum materials.
